What is Sustainable Travel?

Basically, any travel should ultimately have the goal to be sustainable.  We should always be aiming to travel as responsibly as possible, just like you would be conscious of how you act in your own community, the same courtesies can apply to your global community.  Do you recycle at home, try to take public transit or walk, don’t waste water, or keep your parks clean?  These simple things can be done while away in addition to your everyday habits. Maintaining sustainable tourism long term without harmful effects on the environment and no negative impact on the people and places we visit.

Here are a few things that you can easily do to become a more sustainable traveler.

  1. Slow Travel
  2. Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
  3. Research
  4. Be Mindful
  5. Be Ethical
  6. Be Smart

Why is Sustainable Travel Important?

When planning a trip, you have access to all the resources you need to make the right choices for responsible travel.  Do some research to find out about where you going, educating yourself about the history, culture, environment, or politics in the region.  Pick some of your favorite, reliable travel sites, watch interesting movies or documentaries, or find novelists writing about where you’ll be visiting.  Not only does this give you a better idea about your upcoming vacation, but it will also help you to continue to look forward to your trip during the planning stages.  If that’s not enough, I promise it will enrich your time while on your trip, making a stronger memory and a more enjoyable time when you’re on vacation.

Who Can Travel Responsibly?

We all have the ability to!  You can be a budget backpacker or a luxury traveler, anyone has the ability and capacity to travel responsibly if you do a little work on the research end of your trip.  Make sure you are asking the right questions.  Don’t be fooled into thinking that your one vacation each year can’t make a difference.
